On page 433 , Morrison et al. show that the regeneration of newt limbs hinges on the activation of muscle satellite cells—the same sort of stem cells that help to heal our own injured muscles. Unlike the mammalian version, newt satellite cells are separated from muscle fi bers by a basement membrane. As their existence had not been proved until now, scientists thought that regeneration was fueled by the breakdown and dedifferentiation of multinucleated muscle fi bers A newt myofi ber contains a satellite cell (green) that is encapsulated by the basement membrane (red).

The newt reprograms mature RPE cells into a unique multipotent state for retinal regeneration
The reprogramming of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells in the adult newt immediately after retinal injury is an area of active research for the study of retinal disorders and regeneration. We demonstrate here that unlike embryonic/larval retinal regeneration, adult newt RPE cells are not directly reprogrammed into retinal stem/progenitor cells; instead, they are programmed into a unique st...
متن کاملImplications of a Multi-Step Trigger of Retinal Regeneration in the Adult Newt
The newt is an amazing four-limbed vertebrate that can regenerate various body parts including the retina. In this animal, when the neural retina (NR) is removed from the eye by surgery (retinectomy), both the NR and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) eventually regenerate through the process of reprogramming and proliferation of RPE cells. Thus far, we have pursued the onset mechanism of adu...
متن کاملRe-programming of newt cardiomyocytes is induced by tissue regeneration.
Newt hearts are able to repair substantial cardiac injuries without functional impairment, whereas mammalian hearts cannot regenerate. The cellular and molecular mechanisms that control the regenerative capacity of the newt heart are unknown. Here, we show that the ability of newt cardiomyocytes to regenerate cardiac injuries correlates with their ability to transdifferentiate into different ce...
متن کاملExpression and activity of the newt Msx-1 gene in relation to limb regeneration
The Msx-1 homeobox gene is expressed in various contexts during vertebrate development, including the progress zone of the avian and mouse limb bud. Expression of mouse Msx-1 in a cultured myogenic cell line conferred a transformed phenotype and inhibited fusion into myotubes. It has been proposed that Msx-1 expression is required to maintain certain cells in a proliferating and undifferentiate...
متن کاملFunctional joint regeneration is achieved using reintegration mechanism in Xenopus laevis
A functional joint requires integration of multiple tissues: the apposing skeletal elements should form an interlocking structure, and muscles should insert into skeletal tissues via tendons across the joint. Whereas newts can regenerate functional joints after amputation, Xenopus laevis regenerates a cartilaginous rod without joints, a "spike." Previously we reported that the reintegration mec...
